Vapi alternative
Vapi's $0.05 a minute is the hosting fee, not the bill. The transcriber, the model and the voice are separate lines, and their own calculator is refreshingly upfront about it.
Vapi is a developer platform that charges a $0.05 per minute hosting fee plus the transcriber, model and voice at provider cost. Vapi's own calculator estimates 1,000 minutes at $82 to $129 a month. AI Placers builds and runs the agent and bills per booked job instead of per minute.

What the price actually covers
Vapi deserves credit for publishing a calculator that adds the parts up rather than quoting the hosting fee alone. Note what sits outside the per-minute number: a support package if you want an SLA, $10 per extra concurrent line per month, and HIPAA compliance at $2,000 a month, which is the line most healthcare buyers do not see coming.
When Vapi is the right answer
- You are building a voice product and want to choose your own model, voice and transcriber.
- You want to swap models as they improve rather than wait for a vendor to do it.
- You have engineering capacity and the per-component pricing genuinely suits your volume.
- You want to own and operate the agents and the data outright, which Vapi is explicit about.
When we are
- You want a receptionist, not a platform. There is nothing to assemble.
- You need HIPAA handling and $2,000 a month for it changes the business case.
- Four concurrent calls on the free tier will not survive your busiest morning.
- You would rather the bill track booked jobs than minutes, models and voice tokens.
Questions people ask
Is Vapi really $0.05 a minute?
The hosting fee is. The transcriber, model and voice are billed on top at provider cost. Vapi's own calculator puts 1,000 minutes at $82 to $129 a month depending on which model and voice you pick, which is the number to compare against, not the $0.05.
What does HIPAA cost on Vapi?
Their pricing page lists HIPAA-eligible data handling with a DPA and BAA as a $2,000 per month add-on. For a single clinic that is usually the figure that decides the comparison.
Could we build our receptionist on Vapi?
Yes. If you have a developer who wants to own it, Vapi gives you more control than we do, and that control is real rather than marketing. The trade is that someone has to use it.
What happens to our agent if we leave AI Placers?
A fair question to ask us, given Vapi's selling point is that you own and operate your own agents. We run the agent on your behalf. If owning the stack outright matters to you, that is a genuine argument for Vapi.
Try it on your own line first
Two weeks, free, on your own number and calendar. If Vapi suits you better after that, use Vapi. A fortnight is a cheap way to find out either way.
